Greetings from the Community Minority and Non-Formal Education Commission!

The annual AAACE conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico November 7th-11th was a great success. CCMNFE was represented by many presentations in the areas of community and non-formal education, minority and human rights, popular education, religious adult education, and women’s issues, status, and education. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to attend the diverse array of CCMNFE sessions and to meet with many of the members of the CCMNFE commission during the conference.

In addition to the sessions presented under the CCMNFE strand, our commission held an annual meeting at the conference to discuss our work for raising awareness and promoting community-based advocacy work in social justice and culturally responsive practice in adult education. This session was well attended by both new and continuing CCMNFE members. The discussion during this commission meeting was engaging and included conversations about the past work of CCMNFE and ideas for carrying forth our mission, which guides our work in our dedication to the belief that minority and non-formal life-long learners contribute to professional development and human fulfillment within communities as promoters of productive social change and advocates of relevant public policy and programs.

The plans that the Commission of Community, Minority, and Non-Formal Education has for the upcoming year include creating a plan for expanding our reach through social networking, re-energizing the AAACE in Action initiative, and working to highlight the work of commission members and those involved in community education practice. CCMNFE is also planning to create deeper engagement within our communities including making connections with the community members in the city of our next AAACE conference, Memphis, Tennessee.

In addition to the commission planning activities, there is also a transition in leadership to report for CCMNFE. As her term of service has been fulfilled, Dr. Nancy Fire, CCMNFE director, nominated Dr. Jacqueline McGinty to be the new CCMNFE director. Dr. Fire’s leadership and innovation were immensely effective for the commission and her guidance promoted the AAACE in Action project and the Diversity Task Force among many other accomplishments for CCMNFE. The commission is extremely grateful to Dr. Fire for her passion, leadership, and her important contributions to CCMNFE. Dr. Fire will continue to work with the CCMNFE group and AAACE to support our collective efforts.

Everyone involved in the work of CCMNFE is looking forward to strengthening our connections amongst members, attracting new members, and expanding our outreach to all who work in the areas of Community, Minority, and Non-Formal Education.
