Posted by: Dr. J. Bernard Bradley
The 2017 Commission for Distance Learning and Technology (CDLT) “Pre-Conference Symposium on Social Media” will be held on October 31, 2017, from 8 am until 2 pm at the Sheraton Memphis Downtown Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. Proposal Submissions are due June 5, 2017. PLEASE NOTE: This process ONLY applies to proposals for presentation at the “Pre-Conference Symposium on Social Media.”
AAACE/CDLT members and non-members are encouraged to participate. Selected presenters are also encouraged though not required to publish short blog articles in The CDLT News, the commission’s blog newsletter, after the conclusion of the symposium.
Symposium Theme and Presentation Topics
There is something about Memphis that brings people together. Its music, energy and authenticity create a magical mix of people and perspectives. We hope you will share your own stories and perspectives on social media at the intersection of adult learning with colleagues from across the nation and around the globe. Presenters may include both practitioners and academics. What is your story?
Topics may focus on uses of new social media technologies, new or innovative ways of using current technologies, best practices, future trends, case studies, how-to sessions, research, research-to-practice, communities of practice, marketing, phenomenological or action research focusing on “lived experiences,” and more across varied social media platforms! The symposium theme, “one chorus of many voices,” welcomes diverse perspectives from practitioners, faculty, graduate students, trainers, instructional designers, managers, nonprofits, health-related organizations, businesses, consultants and all others who use social media in serving adults.
Submitting a Proposal
Sessions may include “speed presentations” (5 - 10 minutes), followed by roundtable discussions (30 - 45 minutes). These session types will allow most presenters to facilitate two presentations. More specifically, all symposium attendees will participate in speed presentations as a single group, followed by Q & A. Attendees will also benefit from the interaction and in-depth exploration of select topics introduced during speed sessions by attending the roundtable discussions of their choice. The common factor linking all accepted proposals is relevance to and advancement of adult teaching and learning in a wide variety of community-based or higher education settings. The Program Committee may, at its discretion, suggest alternate formats or combine sessions with similar topics into panels or shared concurrent sessions to enhance the exchange of ideas among those with similar interests. An interactive workshop on planning for social media projects and campaigns will be led by pre-selected facilitators and precede all individual symposium presentations.
