What’s News and Special About the AAACE Conference This Year?

By Christy Rhodes, 2017 Conference Chair

What’s New?

We are excited to hold our conference sessions at the Memphis Cook Convention Center right across the street from the downtown Memphis Sheraton Hotel.

Exciting Conference Sessions

Congratulations to our selected proposal presenters for AAACE 2017 Conference! Sessions represent the breadth and scope of the field with 155 concurrent, 27 shared concurrent, 49 roundtable, and 23 poster sessions from our 18 conference threads.  Sessions include information about adult learning, history, and philosophy, as well as offering information about innovations and research in adult learning contexts as diverse as cooperative extension, community and non-formal education, health education, workforce, and continuing education. There’s so much great information at the conference this year! The full Session Schedule will be added to the AAACE website and conference app shortly.

All meeting rooms will have Internet access and up-to-date projection equipment and screens. You’ll still need to bring your own laptop, dongles, and flash drives.  And it’s always good to have a backup for your backup, just in case technology goes awry.

What’s Special about AAACE Sessions (for Presenters)?

If you are a newcomer to the AAACE conference, you’ll notice that attendees are a supportive and passionate group.  They will want to hear your perspective and experience, so make sure you leave enough time for questions and discussion during your session.  The expectation is that you will create an interactive learning environment, so also make sure you include activities that are engaging and thought-provoking. Don’t shy away from asking attendees questions either. You will be thrilled at how many new ideas and tips you’ll be able to collect throughout the conference.

What’s New with Posters?

It will be a challenge to live up to the success of last year’s poster sessions, but this year’s presenters certainly have tried to do just that. The topics reflect research studies, conceptual models, and best practices. There will be one dedicated poster session on Wednesday, November 1 from 3:45 to 5:00 p.m. For those new to being a poster presenter, a good tip would be to include as much important information as possible, leaving you free to answer more in-depth queries. You will be receiving more specific information about creating your poster later this summer. This year, we will be expanding the judging to include three categories, so make sure to join us for some light refreshment as you vote for your favorite posters.

What if my Session Format Changed?

The proposal review team was overwhelmed at the quality and quantity of proposals for AAACE 2017. As a result, there were some presentations that could only be fit into the schedule by changing the presenter’s preferred format. We hope we’ve done our best to accommodate everyone’s needs, but you’ll want to check your inbox in Proposal Space for more detailed information. If you have any problems with your assigned time slot, please email proposals@aaace.org, and we’ll try to take care of things as quickly as possible.

I hope you agree that this year’s sessions are sure to provide a stimulating conference. I can’t wait to start hearing this chorus of voices in Memphis!
