The UK University Association for Lifelong Learning (UALL)
2019 Annual Conference
Lifelong Learning and Innovation
10 – 12 April, 2019

Our 2019 Annual Conference is inspired by its location: Telford, in the West Midlands county of Shropshire. Telford has long been associated with ingenuity and innovation. It is named after Thomas Telford, a key eighteenth-century civil engineer who, amongst many accomplishments, developed the English canal system to dramatically improve industrial transport. Among his engineering triumphs is the Pontcysyllte aqueduct which crosses the Dee Valley in Wales, on nineteen cast iron spans at a heady height of 28.4 metres.

Along with the name bestowed on the town, Telford has earned the title ‘Birthplace of Industry’, in reference to Coalbrookdale and the iconic Iron Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The innovative ironworks of Coalbrookdale enabled the building of British railways and manufactured the world’s first cast-iron bridge – the icon of the first Industrial Revolution.
We are happy to announce that the formal conference dinner and ceremony of the UALL Awards will be held at the Museum of Enguinity, in Coalbrookdale, where our delegates will get a chance to explore and interact in the Museum at Coalbrookdale.

Telford’s trend in innovation has been passed down to modern day, with the development of the Innovation Campus that specialises in Engineering and hosts the University’s student led Formula 3 racing car team. Our delegates will be given the opportunity to visit the team’s workshops at our evening welcome event on Wednesday 10th April.
All this history inspired the theme Lifelong Learning and Innovation and under this umbrella term, we will explore 3 themes
• Lifelong Learning and Place
• Transformational Change
• Innovation in Daily Life and Lifelong Learning

Guest speakers will lead discussion on interconnected strands.
