Title:Best Practices Gone Wrong: Evaluating Online Courses for Success

In a time of rapid growth among both online learning and open access courses, it is important to review best practices for evaluating quality. The presenters, therefore, will discuss best practices for creating and conducting online courses as highlighted by the literature. They will also demonstrate how, despite best intentions, educators frequently implement best practices in confusing and counterproductive ways. Lastly, options are identified to resolve such concerns by assessing online resources using accepted standards as promulgated by professional organizations like iNacol and Quality Matters. By doing so, creators can make their online courses more impactful. Interaction is encouraged via quick polls, Q & A and recommendations from the audience.

After attending this AAACEd It! Webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify best practices for creating and conducting an online course;
  • Assess the quality of online courses for adults; and
  • Resolve common implementation issues.

The target audience includes current and prospective online instructors, curriculum developers, instructional designers, technology specialists, nonprofit leaders, virtual business owners, consultants and graduate assistants/students. Workplace settings vary, but may range from higher education, adult education or community-based environments, to non-formal education and more!


Brianne Moore-Adams is a virtual instructor and curriculum developer with Virtual Virginia, a program of the Virginia Department of Education, as well as a Doctoral Student and Co-Instructor with the Online Teaching Certificate program at Virginia Commonwealth University.   She has over 16 years of experience as a teacher and has been a virtual teacher for nine years.  Brianne works closely with first year virtual instructors and conducts professional development for the Virtual Virginia program. Her line of research includes preparing teachers to teach online, online personas and virtual communities.


As a Vice President for a language school, Valeriana Colon has over five years of experience managing online international language immersion programs for the government, medical, sports/entertainment and trade industries using a communicative and inquiry-based teaching model. With nine years of experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), she has taught a variety of ESL topics including: academic language, business English, accent reduction and test preparation. Her published works include topics like: the assessment of online resources, and international student perceptions of online resources
