CDLT Welcomes Dr. Kathleen Stone as Awards Chair

We enjoy celebrating CDLT members’ accomplishments, and we now have a committee to recognize our members through awards and special recognitions. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Kathleen Stone as our Awards Chair.

Dr. Kathleen Stone was recently hired as Director of Curriculum for the College of Business at Western Governors University where she is responsible for the development and performance of all undergraduate and graduate business programs. Western Governors University follows an innovative model by utilizing an online, competency-based approach to meet the needs of adult learners.  Previously, Kathleen was Director for Curriculum and Instructional Design in the Center for Distance Learning at SUNY Empire State College. Empire State College was created to serve nontraditional leaners and quickly expanded to online learning in the early 90’s. She managed a team responsible for supporting faculty in the development, design, and revision of master online courses and supporting instructor development and training of over 500 adjunct instructors. She also has community college experience serving adult learners, where she held roles such as Coordinator of Community and Workforce Development and adjunct faculty teaching face-to-face and hybrid formats.

Kathleen has explored new and innovative modes of learning from the use of open educational resources, badging, MOOCs, and adaptive learning to the recent development and pilot of competency-based IT courses as part of the Educause NGLC Business Models Incubator. In 2012, she was part of a project to develop a MOOC on open education resources for the SUNY system on the Coursesites Platform. In 2014, she was a Co-PI on a grant to develop a MOOC on Metaliteracy that integrated badging. That project branched into two MOOCs, one on Coursera and Canvas. Kathleen is also an accessibility advocate, working to ensure all learners can benefit from innovative educational approaches. In 2015, she was successful awarded a grant as PI to develop a MOOC on the Canvas platform on designing and teaching courses with accessibility in mind.

Kathleen’s research interests include online course completion, school community, and accessibility. She completed her doctoral research titled Exploring Online Community College Course Completion and Sense of School Community in 2015. She is researching the effectiveness of the accessibility MOOC and how completion relates to the participants intentions to complete the course. She has presented at state and national conferences on OER, accessibility, competency-based learning, online course completion, and school community.

Kathleen started her own educational journey as an adult, attending community college. She completed her Associates degree in Math/Science and her Bachelor’s in Geology. She quickly learned that she most appreciated and looked forward to helping other adults learn. She went on to complete her M.S. in Adult Education specializing in Human Resource Development from SUNY Buffalo State College, and her Ed.D. in Higher Education and Adult Learning from Walden University. She is also a Certified Program Planner.
