One of the most frequent comments we hear is how much AAACE members enjoy the networking that happens at our annual conference. Wouldn’t it be great to extend those connections throughout the year? The good news is that the updated AAACE website offers a multitude of ways to do just that. The first thing you’ll need to do is log in and update your member profile. Then, go to the groups page and check out the new features now available. There is a group directory with all the members of the SIG, as well as a calendar, blogs, a photo gallery, and even a discussion forum.

In short, you and your fellow SIG members can connect with each other by starting new conversations in a forum, sharing your personal blog, or simply posting photos relevant to your interest area. This is the perfect time to work with your SIG leadership to determine how you want to use these features. They will be waiting to hear from you, so go ahead and get connected! Once you’re done with the Groups page, you’ll want to explore the Connections page, which allows you to connect with even more members from across AAACE commissions and SIGs. I plan on using this function to replace my neglected business card holder from now on. How will you use it?

New SIG Leadership

Thanks to all of you who have been involved in leading the AAACE special interest groups. You did an incredible job organizing the featured sessions in Oklahoma City and are an integral part of the conference proposal review process. So, thank you very much! The Military Education SIG will be welcoming two co-chairs, Dr. Patricia Brewer and Ms. Elaine Vreeland. Dr. Brewer is an active scholar-practitioner in adult higher education, with over thirty years of service to adult students and the institutions that serve them. She serves as the Midwest Regional Liaison for the American Council on Education, focusing on credit for prior learning and degree completion strategies for adult students. This includes veteran and military service personnel who have acquired credits for prior learning. A long-time advocate for best practices in adult higher education, she has worked to ensure quality in adult degree programs and to expand prior learning assessment options. Dr. Brewer has been a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission since 1999, has served as a participant-researcher with Dayton’s Kettering Foundation, and is past-president of the Adult Higher Education Alliance.

Ms. Vreeland has served as a military community manager for eight years at University of Phoenix. Her passion for adult higher education began as military spouse in the Air Force over 30 years ago where she had firsthand experience of the lack of educational accessibility and support for military spouses. Since this time it has been Elaine’s mission to work closely with all military families to ensure they have access to information and assistance to achieve their educational goals. Elaine has a strong background of military ties, both her grandfather, father and uncles served in the British Army. Her son is a Marine currently serving in Okinawa and her daughter graduated this month from recruit training in the Air Force.

Please take the time to check out all of our SIGs through their homepages on the AAACE website. If you have any questions, feel free to email the SIG chairs or me at
