CDLT: LinkedIn Webinar, Conference Sessions and New Award

The Commission for Distance Learning and Technology (CDLT) is pleased to offer an upcoming LinkedIn webinar, approximately 38 diverse technology sessions and panels for AAACE 2016 in Albuquerque, and a new award for outstanding commission leaders and members. It’s easy to engage with the CDLT!

Finding Your Link: Using LinkedIn for e-Learning, Communities of Practice, and Business

Though social networking sites abound, LinkedIn is somewhat unique. According to the company’s website, LinkedIn is “the world's largest professional network with more than 433 million members in 200 countries and territories around the globe.” However, its uses beyond mere professional networking are expanding rapidly. According to Pappas (2014), “LinkedIn is no longer just a place where recruiters and hiring managers seek out potential candidates. This professional networking platform has become an invaluable social learning tool for eLearning professionals” (p.1). Towards that end, the Commission for Distance Learning and Technology (CDLT) is sponsoring an interactive AAACEd It! Webinar on Thursday, August 11th, from 2 pm to 3 pm Eastern Time (ET), titled “Finding Your Link: Using LinkedIn for e-Learning, Communities of Practice, and Business.”

The featured presenter, Leigh Ann Whittle has more than 15 years of experience in public relations, writing, and editing. In addition, she has nearly eight years' experience teaching communication courses at Elon University, Liberty University, and Guilford Technical Community College. In 2014, she formed Sapphire Communications, a small business marketing and public relations firm. She also co-owns Aviation Lifestyles, which retails merchandise for pilots and aviation enthusiasts. Leigh Ann’s experience gives her both professional and academic interest in business communication techniques and best practices. Leigh Ann has a B.A. in Corporate Communications and Journalism from Elon University, an M.A. in English from East Carolina University, and a M.Ed. in Adult Education from North Carolina State University.

CDLT Accepts 38 Technology Sessions for AAACE 2016 in Albuquerque

Sessions under the “distance and online learning (including technology)” strand will be well-represented at the 2016 AAACE conference! Approximately 38 proposals have been recommended by the CDLT’s proposal review committee for dynamic concurrent sessions, shared concurrent sessions, engaging roundtable discussions and poster presentations. We hope to see you in Albuquerque to explore the diverse landscape of distance learning and technology at the intersection of adult learning.

Simone C.O. Conceição Leads Special Panel at AAACE Conference

The CDLT will sponsor an interactive panel discussion, titled Transition from Face-to-Face to Online: What is there for Adult Educators?, at the upcoming AAACE conference in Albuquerque on Wednesday, November 9th, from 9:15 am to 10 am Mountain Time (MT). Simone C.O. Conceição, Ph.D., University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, will lead the panel. Other presenters include Joellen E. Coryell, Ph.D., Texas State University, and William C. Diehl, Ph.D., The Pennsylvania State University.

Distance learning is growing exponentially because of the convenience of time and place. This interactive panel discussion focuses on strategies for both transitioning existing courses or designing new ones for online delivery and creating a sense of presence among virtual adult learners in the U.S. and across the globe. Current and prospective online instructors, instructional designers, distance education administrators, consultants, and graduate students in higher education, community-based, or business settings will all benefit from this pragmatic session. Attendees are encouraged to pose questions or share their own best practices and artifacts with colleagues.

A free continental breakfast is available on Wednesday morning prior to all conference sessions. Details will appear in the next edition of CDLT News Briefs or The CDLT News, along with the official conference program.

Approval Received for New CDLT Director’s Appreciation Award

Upon recommendation by the AAACE Awards Committee, the AAACE’s Executive Committee acting on behalf of the AAACE board, recently approved a new CDLT internal award. The new CDLT Director’s Appreciation Award is now an annual award given by the CDLT director to the most outstanding CDLT member(s) or executive team leader(s). The award is given annually during either a CDLT-sponsored event or another distance learning or technology session at the AAACE conference to no more than two recipients in any calendar year.

Selection criteria:

  • Must be an active member of the CDLT.
  • Must demonstrate significant leadership to the CDLT that helps move forward the commission’s mission and goals.
  • Must demonstrate a commendable level of volunteerism through visible evidence of selfless dedication to CDLT projects and services. Candidates must also be committed to both completing projects and assisting others in achieving their own goals.

Selection process:

The CDLT director will annually select a recipient(s) by September 1st based on the stated criteria.

CDLT Seeks Leaders to Serve Growing Membership

The CDLT is looking for innovative leadership team members to better meet the needs of our growing membership and the adult learners we serve. Both faculty members and practitioners that represent the diversity of our expansive field are welcome. There is a place for you in the CDLT!

Volunteers are needed for the following positions: Membership/Networking Chair (includes social media networking); Technology/Website Chair; Program Chair; Graduate Student Chair; Secretary; and Newsletter Co-Editor. Committee members are also needed. To volunteer or request additional information, email the CDLT Director, J. Bernard Bradley, at no later than September 15th. The email subject line should include “CDLT leader.”
