Greetings Members of the Graduate Student Commission: Yes, you read it correctly. The Graduate Student SIG is now the Graduate Student Commission (GSC). As the director of the GSC, I want to extend my gratitude. I am humbled and honored to serve the graduate student-member constituency. As the director, my responsibility is to act as your voice by bringing forth relevant issues that will help expand as well as create more professional development opportunities beyond the annual conferences.

As 2016 comes to an end, I would like to shine a spotlight on the 2016 Graduate Student Breakfast, which was held in Albuquerque, NM. On behalf of the GSC, I would like to thank Dr. Steven Schmidt and Dr. Bernard J. Bradley for participating as panelist on the Graduate Student Breakfast Panel. The panelists provided attendees with pragmatic strategies to a) increase awareness about the many different avenues to take in searching for job opportunities in the field of Adult Education and to b) enhance their employability after their graduate school experience. A survey revealed that attendees believed that the panelists were knowledgeable of the topic and presented helpful information. All of the surveyed attendees agreed that they would attend a Graduate Student Breakfast in the future. For those members who attended the 2016 Graduate Student Breakfast in Albuquerque, NM, thank you! For those members who did not attend, I hope to see you at the 2017 Graduate Student Breakfast in Memphis, TN.

A Look Forward…
As the GSC looks forward to 2017, a plan of action has been set forth to highlight goals/ activities that are geared towards your professional development. The goals and activities include but not limited to:

  • Expand Supportive/Mentoring Resources
  • Conduct Educational Webinars/Workshops
  • Increase Volunteer Engagement
  • Feature Job Announcements

As always, the GSC strides to meet the needs of its members. So, please take the opportunity to sound off and share your ideas. I can be reached at also want to encourage you to invite your colleagues and friends to join the GSC.

Now, go out and do great things.
