It has been an exciting year for AAACE and the strategic initiatives related to partnerships! As the umbrella organization for adult learning, AAACE has been a guiding force for connecting our diverse practitioners and scholars across the globe. In association with this part of our mission, 8 new or renewed partnerships were developed in 2016! With a rekindled focus this past year, AAACE looks forward to continued collaborations that provide opportunities to share ideas, encourage professional development, foster learning, and engagement with our various partners!

AONTAS is the National Adult Learning Organisation, a non-government membership organisation established in 1969. The mission of AONTAS is to advocate for the right of all adults in Ireland to quality learning throughout their lives, and to promote the value and benefits of lifelong learning.

The name AONTAS is an acronym in the Irish language; Aos Oideachais Náisiúnta Trí Aontú Saorálach, meaning 'national adult education through voluntary unification'. The word AONTAS itself is also the Irish word for 'unity' or 'union', so the intention of the founders was that AONTAS would be identified by its inclusiveness. AONTAS was core funded by the Department of Education and Skills through SOLAS and receives project funding from other sources from time to time.

AONTAS has approximately 550 voluntary, statutory and individual members. The organisation works to support the work of its members through the provision of information, lobby campaigns, organising networking opportunities for members and representation at national level.

Several of our other partners also have conferences in the near future, including:

  • The Adult Higher Education Alliance (AHEA) Conference – March 9-10 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The theme is “Writing Our Way: Giving Voice to Adult Learning”.
Proposals should be submitted by December 31, 2016 for approval by January 15, 2017.
  • 2017 Transformative Learning Conference – March 2-3 in downtown Oklahoma City, OK. The theme is DOING TL IN THE CLASSROOM. Registration is now open – see

More information on these and other partners and events can be found at the AAACE web site. Each of our partnerships represent unique agreements to fit the needs of the partner organizations and members.

There are too many people to name who have worked on these and other partnerships initiatives. All I can say is THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for all that you do for AAACE and the adult learner! I have had a wonderful year as CAO and I know you will be just as fruitful in the capable hands of the new CAO, David Grebel.

We look forward to new initiatives from you, our AAACE members, to continue to connect us with associations that you are involved with and important to the field of adult education. Our members and partner associations are critical to providing a diverse coalition for the adult learning practice and profession; and ultimately the adult learner!
