On behalf of the AAACE’s Commission for Distance Learning and Technology (CDLT) and its leadership team, welcome to the March 2017 edition of The CDLT News, our blog newsletter. Once again, we are featuring blog posts from members, along with a guest blogger to promote additional publication opportunities in the broad field of distance and online learning (including technology). Additionally, our newsletter editor and communications chair, Leigh Ann Whittle, shares results of her own interview with Ann Brooks, CPAE chair and Adult Learning co-editor. We are also exploring the feasibility of submitting a proposal for a special edition of Adult Learning focusing on a niche area of distance and online learning or technology at the intersection of adult learning.

Though the CDLT has existed for just three short years as one of eight AAACE commissions, the CDLT is introducing three new initiatives for 2017. For example, a new best-practice award is available annually to up to two CDLT members or programs led by members on a competitive basis. If not already a CDLT member, join today to meet eligibility requirements. A request for nominees or self-nominations will be posted soon on the AAACE website and disseminated via email.

For the first time, the CDLT will host a Pre-Conference Symposium on Social Media as part of the 2017 AAACE conference in Memphis. This half-day interactive event will feature both a workshop and opportunities for CDLT members and non-members to facilitate brief presentations and roundtable discussions on the niche topic of social media in a congenial environment. A request for pre-conference presenters and facilitators will be released soon.

Lastly, a new Member Spotlight newsletter feature is designed to promote networking among members with similar interests. Each spotlight features an individual member’s biography or story, followed by their educational philosophy of working with adult learners or playing non-educator support roles like curriculum development and instructional development, among others. Our goal is to be inclusive of the varied roles that CDLT members play not only in academe, but also the workplace in general, and various support roles in between.
