President’s Article
Steve Frye, AAACE President

In November 2016 the AAACE Board worked on a Strategic Plan that helped to conceptualize our vision and direction for the next few years. This interactive process included significant input from our membership as we worked with AAACE member and Board surveys to gain a deeper understanding of the heartbeat of our organization. The following shared values rose to the top:

  • Respect and appreciation for multiple perspectives
  • Foster community
  • Provide an inclusive space
  • Openly develop and exchange ideas
  • Learn from each other
  • Provide opportunities for growth
  • Foster support for theory and practice of adult learning
  • Be of service to others
  • Sustain the identity of the profession

As I ponder these shared values, these are truly the things that drew me to AAACE as a graduate student 13 years ago. With so many options available to professionals, why should anyone be involved in a “community” of adult educators, and specifically this organization? For me, terms like respect, community, inclusion, opportunity, service, support, and learning together permeate my thinking. The fact that these are the values most often portrayed in the thinking of our membership and leadership makes me proud to be part of this organization. These shared values will drive future decision as we develop the next steps for our organization.

There are good days ahead for AAACE. I believe we are part of some of the “good things” happening in our world. Thank you for choosing to accompany us on the journey!

NOTE FROM AAACE: We would like your feedback and comments on the Core Values that were mentioned in this article. Please feel free to comment at our blog.
