The AAACE SIG for Popular Education is refreshing itself again. We have a new leadership team including Michelle Glowacki-Dudka, Dawn Murphy, and Chinedu Anumudu who began working on the SIG in May 2017. Currently, we have thirty-six members listed. As popular education is sometimes hard to define and implement in our daily lives within hierarchies and traditional institutions, we seek experiences and learning from our members. We challenge our members to define popular education in their own context and to share with others how to incorporate or utilize popular education into their teaching and daily practice. Please join us in this important work.

When we asked ourselves, what is popular education, we said...

* Popular education supports an informed and engaged citizenry.
* Humanization is at the heart of popular education.
* Popular education is a remedy for nihilism.
* Popular education serves as a means for a community to create its own meaning.
* Popular Education is a collaborative learning approach that values experience and critical reflection on systems of power that seek to constrain a common voice to bring power to the people.

Popular education was highlighted in the August 2016 Special Issue of Adult Learning about Highlander Research and Education Center. The Center has been a touchstone for this work for 85 years and continues to go strong. We hope to be able to celebrate their anniversary at the AAACE Conference in Memphis. We also plan to collaborate with the Folk Education Association of America (FEAA), as Dawn sits on their board.

We anticipate more activity from this SIG. Upcoming plans include:
Hosting a webinar about popular education and folk schools in the fall of 2017.
Making presentations at the AAACE conference.
Engaging with members during the SIG meeting times.
Sharing more resources on the SIG page of the AAACE.ORG website.

We invite your participation!
