About the Book:

This groundbreaking resource moves us from theory to action with a practical plan for reparations.

A surge in interest in black reparations is taking place in America on a scale not seen since the Reconstruction Era. The Black Reparations Project gathers an accomplished interdisciplinary team of scholars—members of the Reparations Planning Committee—who have considered the issues pertinent to making reparations happen. This book will be an essential resource in the national conversation going forward.

The first section of The Black Reparations Project crystallizes the rationale for reparations, cataloguing centuries of racial repression, discrimination, violence, mass incarceration, and the immense black-white wealth gap. Drawing on the contributors’ expertise in economics, history, law, public policy, public health, and education, the second section unfurls direct guidance for building and implementing a reparations program, including draft legislation that addresses how the program should be financed and how claimants can be identified and compensated. Rigorous and comprehensive, The Black Reparations Project will motivate, guide, and speed the final leg of the journey for justice.

Arthur (Jack) Payne Crabtree Memorial Grant https://www.aaace.org/news/636445/ https://www.aaace.org/news/636445/

Support for the Arthur (Jack) Payne Crabtree Memorial Fund is provided by a generous bequest to the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) received from the estate of Myrna P. Crabtree, wife of the late Arthur (Jack) Payne Crabtree (February 18, 1904 - November 25, 1989). The purpose of the fund is to grant awards for leadership in adult public affairs and literacy/adult basic education. The funds are being used to create a series of programs and activities in support of developing and advancing the skills and knowledge of current and future practitioners who will take on leadership roles in adult public affairs or literacy/basic education programs.

Jack Crabtree’s contributions to the field of Adult and Continuing Education are significant. Crabtree served as the President of the Adult Education Association of the United States, which merged with the National Association for Public and Continuing Adult Education (NAPCAE) to form AAACE in 1982, from 1963-1964 (Past Presidents, 2023). Crabtree supported the Adult Education Act of 1966, stating as representative of Adult Education Association, "We feel that it is perhaps the most giant step forward we have had in adult education so far in this country (US Senate, 1966)." (Hardy, 2015) Crabtree was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to serve on the National Advisory Committee on Adult Basic Education, which was created by the Adult Education Act of 1966. (ERIC ED045872: Second Annual Report of the National Advisory Committee on Adult Basic Education., 1969).

In 1986, Dr. Waynne James, President of AAACE, presented the President's Award to Crabtree and his wife, Myrna, for outstanding contributions to the association.

AAACE Past President Dr. Vanessa Sheared on Panel for First-Generation College Celebration https://www.aaace.org/news/623074/ https://www.aaace.org/news/623074/ The First-Generation College Celebration Virtual Event

In 2017, the Council for Opportunity in Education  (COE) and the Center for First-generation Student Success launched the inaugural First-Generation College Celebration! Given the continued success of this event, COE and the Center now partner to make this celebration an annual event each year on November 8.

November 8 was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. The Higher Education Act (“HEA”) emerged out of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. Much like other hallmark legislation of that era, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, HEA was intended to help level a playing field that for too long had been weighed against Americans from minority and low-income backgrounds. In addition to creating federal grants and loan programs to help students finance their educations, the legislation made key investments in institutions of higher education. Additionally, HEA ushered in programs, particularly the Federal TRIO programs, necessary for postsecondary access, retention, and completion for low-income, potential first-generation college graduates.

The 2022 National First-Generation College Celebration Virtual Event featured a panel discussing the first-generation adult learner identity, sharing their unique experiences and offering insight into tools and resources. Moderated by Dr. Brenda Dann-Messier, Senior Advisor, Education Strategy Group; panelists included Dr. Kelly Brochu, Assistant to the President for Special Projects, Regis College, Matt Donovan, Director of Educational Access Programs, Morehead State University, and Dr. Vanessa Sheared, Board Immediate Past President, American Association for Adult and Continuing Education.

Robinson Authors Ninth Edition of The Adult Learner

How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today.

Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include:
    • Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field.
    • The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner.
    • An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids. For each chapter, there will be a PowerPoint presentation, learning exercises, and added study questions.
    • Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices.
If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

The Adult Learner: The Definitive Classic in Adult Education and Human Resource Development (9th ed. https://www.aaace.org/news/546989/ https://www.aaace.org/news/546989/ By Malcolm S. Knowles, Elwood F. Holton III, Richard A. Swanson, and Petra A. Robinson

Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering work in the field of andragogy continues to be the basis of learning theory and practice we use in adult education today. The Adult Learner, first published in 1973, embodies the idea of andragogy and includes theoretical principles as well as practical guidelines, making it a required reading for anyone interested in how adults learn. This primer has seen its ninth edition published in 2020, revised to address the very latest advancements in the field, including two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. The revisions in the ninth edition were guided by the idea to make the book even more readable and relevant to contemporary practice.

This book is a definitive classic and a must-have for researchers, practitioners, students, training managers, and others involved in adult education and human resource development. It is available via Routledge, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other booksellers.

The American Association for Adult and Continuing Education congratulates Chair of the 2020 and 2021 conferences, Dr. Petra A. Robinson, on this publication.
