Greetings AAACE member!

This coming year is the 100th year celebration of adult education in the US, with the anniversary of Lindeman’s Meaning of Adult Education (1926). He reminds us that adult education “is life, not a mere preparation for an unknown kind of future living.”

AAACE embraces the Wide Umbrella of Adult Education and honors each person’s perspective and connection through your research and your practice. As part of the 100th year celebration, we ask that you share a TESTIMONIAL – through video or writing about how adult education and AAACE has been part of your professional and personal life. These stories will provide a wide understanding of how each of us comes to adult education as part of our practice even though we all have different expertise of content and context. Please share your story with us here.

There are new, meaningful, and affordable options posted on the AAACE website to show your support through sponsorship packages. If you know an organization who would benefit from aligning with AAACE, please share this link and encourage them to join us!

Most importantly, we invite you to celebrate the Centennial of Adult Education at the October AAACE Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio (October 6-10) and at the Virtual Conference (September 26).

We will also host special monthly webinars starting in August 2025. Please watch for more announcements in your email and on the AAACE.org website.

Thank you so much.

Michelle (Shelly) Glowacki-Dudka
President-Elect of AAACE

Crabtree, wife of the late Arthur (Jack) Payne Crabtree (February 18, 1904 - November 25, 1989). The purpose of the fund is to grant awards for leadership in adult public affairs and literacy/adult basic education. The funds are being used to create a series of programs and activities in support of developing and advancing the skills and knowledge of current and future practitioners who will take on leadership roles in adult public affairs or literacy/basic education programs.

Jack Crabtree’s contributions to the field of Adult and Continuing Education are significant. Crabtree served as the President of the Adult Education Association of the United States, which merged with the National Association for Public and Continuing Adult Education (NAPCAE) to form AAACE in 1982, from 1963-1964 (Past Presidents, 2023). Crabtree supported the Adult Education Act of 1966, stating as representative of Adult Education Association, "We feel that it is perhaps the most giant step forward we have had in adult education so far in this country (US Senate, 1966)." (Hardy, 2015) Crabtree was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to serve on the National Advisory Committee on Adult Basic Education, which was created by the Adult Education Act of 1966. (ERIC ED045872: Second Annual Report of the National Advisory Committee on Adult Basic Education., 1969).

In 1986, Dr. Waynne James, President of AAACE, presented the President's Award to Crabtree and his wife, Myrna, for outstanding contributions to the association.

CLICK HERE to learn more and apply.

Bibliography

Adult Education Contributors. (n.d.).
November 8 was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. The Higher Education Act (“HEA”) emerged out of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. Much like other hallmark legislation of that era, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, HEA was intended to help level a playing field that for too long had been weighed against Americans from minority and low-income backgrounds. In addition to creating federal grants and loan programs to help students finance their educations, the legislation made key investments in institutions of higher education. Additionally, HEA ushered in programs, particularly the Federal TRIO programs, necessary for postsecondary access, retention, and completion for low-income, potential first-generation college graduates.

AAACE Board Approves Position Paper on U.S. Reparations for black American Descendants of Slavery

The AAACE Board recently approved a position paper on U.S. Reparations for black American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS). The paper was authored by Dr. Lisa R. Brown and Dr. William Darity, Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a quintessential adult educator and social justice advocate. The Highlander Research and Education Center has to its training credit Dr. King, Rosa Parks, and Septima Clark who, as attendees, learned strategies and models for adult literacy and civic engagement used to power the American Civil Rights movement. Dr. King was an explicit advocate for restorative justice for black American citizens via reparations (Coates, 2014). We share the common aims of human fulfillment and positive social change with the association. We also agree that AAACE’s vision is operationalized in its mission to advocate for public policy and social change that expands adult growth and development, ultimately resulting in more productive and satisfying lives.

AAACE Board Approves Position Paper on National Legislation for a New Age of Lifetime Learning

National Legislation for a New Age of Lifetime Learning:
Tax Deferred Lifelong Learning and Training Accounts

Propelled by a new wave of integrative digital technological innovations that are transforming how people live, work, and interact, the U.S. economy is posed to enter a Fourth Industrial Revolution (i.e., Industry 4.0) (Schultz, 2019). The digital innovations during Industry 4.0 are expected to severely disrupt the U.S. workforce, require workers to continuously upgrade theirskills, and usher in a new age of lifetime learning. However, a system of financing access to quality education and training programming is needed to assure equitable access for those unable to afford it(i.e., middle and lower-income workers). National legislation creating Tax Deferred Lifelong Learning and Training Accounts (LLTAs) should be supported by adult educators as a national response to the educational and training related challenges presented by Industry 4.0.

Adult, continuing and community education associations across the globe all share the need to disseminate information about their professional development opportunities and other work done by their associations. Adult educators from all facets of the field need to be able to connect with one another at times when many voices acting as one is more powerful than a single voice acting alone. Only by connecting and collaborating will we be able to ensure the ultimate vision expressed by AAACE of a "more humane world made possible by the diverse practice of our members in helping adults acquire the knowledge, skills and values needed to lead productive and satisfying lives."

eucen online Seminar 2020 Across the Atlantic

Thursday 28 May 2020 from 15:00CET until 18:00CET

How to survive in critical times? University Lifelong Learning 4.0

The COVID-19 has impacted the World with surprising speed. Things that had been planned and agreed for a long time had to be cancelled and re-thought. New models of teaching and learning were needed. Thousands of classes were put at stake - there was not a lot of time for thinking and, at the same time, a lot of thinking was necessary.

How have universities re-invented their way of delivering classes? What have been the major challenges and which are the greatest successes? Did we already have models to adopt without even knowing it? How has ULLL suffered in this new situation and how has it managed to survive?

Join us in a dynamic trans-Atlantic seminar where Europe and the US come closer to address responses to unexpected critical situations. We want to imagine together ways to manage and mitigate the consequences of Covid-19 and potential future crises

This seminar is free for members of eucen, UPCEA and AAACE. Non-members registration fee: €50

AAACE member and Commission Director Dr. Tricia Berry will share her experiences at a US based online University during the Coronavirus pandemic:

"The Coronavirus pandemic caught much of the world by surprise and will likely have a lasting change on how education is provided across the world. Online institutions did not experience the rapid transitions that traditional institutions were forced to endure, but were not free of impacts from the virus. This presentation will provide some perspective on how the pandemic impacted one online university based in the United States. Insights regarding preparing for future crises will also be shared."

for Outstanding Adult Education Program of the Year

This award was established in the name of Malcolm S. Knowles for his distinguished contribution to theory and practice in the field of adult education from 1935 onward. A hallmark of "Malcolm's" work has been his popularization of the theory of andragogy — the art and science of helping adults learn — in the USA and the spread of its influence around the world. This award is intended to give recognition to an adult education program, including the personnel responsible for carrying out the program, in accordance with the andragogical process.
